Despite frosty mornings seemingly past us, a cold snap looks set to hit the UK over the next few nights, leaving many Brits with frozen windscreens.

However, savvy motorists are looking for ways to stop the frost affecting them altogether.

And while there are plenty of ways motorists can make their mornings easier, there is also a lot of misinformation online about how to keep your motor frost-free.

So to help, the experts at Wiperblades have shared four cost-effective household items that can help you get a clear start in the morning.

Spray white vinegar

You’ll probably have some tucked away at the back of your kitchen cupboard, but white vinegar works wonders when it comes to preventing your windscreen from icing up. Simply combine 125 ml of white vinegar with 375 ml of water in a 500 ml spray bottle.

Spray the mixture on your windshield the night before the temperature drops, or in the morning to help melt any existing ice. The acetic acid in the vinegar helps lower the freezing point of water, making it harder for ice to form.

Rub a raw onion on your windscreen

Another cheap household method for preventing your windscreen from freezing over is to cut an onion in half and rub it over the exterior of your windscreen the night before a big freeze.

While this may sound unconventional, the natural oils in the onion are great for creating a protective coating on the glass, preventing frost from forming and saving you some time in the morning.

Use a windscreen cover to protect your glass

If you’re prone to watery eyes when handling raw onions, then an old rubber bathmat or folded sheet can be a lifesaver. Just lay it over your windscreen and secure it with your wipers so that it doesn’t get blown away overnight.

You can also use carrier bags with rubber bands to protect your side mirrors from freezing. Come morning, simply remove and stash them away – job done.

Coat wiper blades in rubbing alcohol

It’s easy to be focused solely on the frost on your windscreen during the winter months, but don’t forget that wiper blades are also at risk of freezing!

Frozen wiper blades can’t clear your windscreen properly, leading to poor visibility, which is especially dangerous in icy conditions. For this reason, it’s essential to also prevent blades from freezing.

To protect your wiper blades, coat them with rubbing alcohol. As rubbing alcohol also has a lower freezing point than water, this hack will also help prevent freezing. It also ensures your wiper blades remain flexible and functional the next morning.
