Searches for ‘Over 60’s bus pass’ have risen by 387.06% in the UK after the government announced new car tax rules for over 70s. On April 1st, these new rules will see the Standard Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) fees increase to £195 and no longer exempt older drivers because of their age.

Bus travel expert, GetByBus, analysed Google search data after the news broke.

Once the new rules take effect, only elderly drivers with a recognised disability will continue to qualify for exemption. However, healthy pensioners will be required to pay. Many people have expressed their upset online, with several accusing the government of ‘attacking’ them.

The graph shows searches for the term ‘Over 60’s bus pass’ over the past 30 days in the UK.

Ante Dagelić, CEO of GetByBus, has commented on the findings: “The surge in searches reflects a clear shift in public concern following the government’s new car tax rules.

“Many older individuals who previously relied on their vehicles for independence are now exploring alternative transport options.

“This increase highlights the financial strain that changes to motoring costs can have on retirees, prompting them to seek cost-effective travel solutions.”
