These three simple headlight checks could stop you failing your MOT

Experts are warning that some of the most common causes of MOT failure could be avoided with just a few simple checks.

Data from the DVSA reveals that almost three million Brits had a fault with their lamps, reflectors, or electrical equipment during their MOT this year.[1]

Not only does this mean that faulty electrical equipment was responsible for over a quarter of MOT defects, but that many drivers are putting theirs and other road users’ safety at risk.

Failing to keep your headlights in good condition can seriously affect your visibility as a driver, therefore increasing the risk of an accident. So, to help motorists avoid these faults, the team at Vertu have shared three common signs that your headlights are faulty.

1. Cloudy or yellowed lenses

The lenses on most modern headlights break down when exposed to UV rays, which means they often appear cloudy or slightly yellowed during and after the summer months. This doesn’t just make your car look unattractive, it also reduces your visibility on the road.

While you can buy a new pair of headlamps, there is an at home remedy that can work in some cases. By using a combination of toothpaste and bicarbonate of soda, you can scrape away the oxidised surface layer of your headlamp with a toothbrush. Once dried, wipe away the mixture with a damp cloth, and your headlamp should be looking as good as new.

2. Dim or flickering lights

If you notice that your bulbs look dim or are flickering, then it might be nearing the end of its life. Most halogen bulbs have a life span of between 500 to 1,000 hours depending on the exact bulb used.

If your bulb goes out completely, and the police notice you’re driving with one headlight, you will be handed an on-the-spot fine of £100 and be given three points on your licence. That’s one of the many reasons why it is so important to get your bulbs changed as soon as you notice any defects.

3. Uneven beams

Misaligned headlights are another issue that can worsen driving conditions. If your headlights are aimed too high, they may blind oncoming drivers, whereas if they’re too low, they won’t adequately light up the road ahead.

To check your alignment, park your motor on a level surface and switch on the headlights. You should first be parked 60cm away from a wall or door – placing a piece of tape where the beam is brightest. Backing your car up to eight metres, you should check again to see if the beam is still centred on the wall. If it’s misaligned, adjust the screws on the back of the assembly to correct the orientation.
